good morning. i'm john muller. rob nelson's on assignment. >> and i'm paula faris. we begin with new fears about anti-american violence after a deadly attack in libya. >> two state department employees have been killed in an assault on the u.s. consulate. >> abc's tahman bradley has been following the story throughout the night. >> reporter: a controversial film is believed to be igniting violence against u.s. embassies in the arab world. in benghazi, libya, two state employees were killed when a mob set fire to the u.s. consulate. firing grenades and outnumbering forces. and in cairo, egypt, anti-american demonstratored pulled down an american flag, ripping it to shreds. before replacing it with a black flag of islamic faith. >> we are trying to restore order at the embassy and to work with them to get the situation under control.

>> reporter: the protesters appear to be angry about a movie believed to be made in america, that they say insults the prophet mohammed. secretary of state hillary clinton in a statement, strongly condemned the attack in benghazi, saying this kind of violence is never justifiable. secretary clinton says the u.s. deplores any effort to denigrate the religious beliefs others. it is being linked to the likes of terry jones, who infamously burned a koran in 2010. jones said the movie is not designed to attack muslims. but to show the destructive ideology of islam. islamic extremist group has claimed responsibility for the benghazi attack. officials fear there could be more violence. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. >> thanks to tahman bradley for that report. again, two state department officials have been killed in libya. we have a team of reporters in the region. for the very latest updates, coming up on "good morning america."

that violence has been condemned by presidential campaigns. and now, with 55 days to go, mitt romney is coming under heavy criticism, not from democrats but from members of his own party. it comes after the latest polls show president obama opening up a slight lead. here's abc's david muir. >> reporter: mitt romney in nevada on the anniversary of 9/11, in front of the national guard. >> we must keep our promises and regain the trust of all those who have worn the uniform and served our country. >> reporter: his speech comes after criticism that romney left afghanistan out of his convention speech. his loudest critics might be within his own party, after the poll numbers showing the president now leading the race. more americans now trust the president on the economy than romney. and on that point, conservative commentator, lara ingram chiming in. on her radio show -- >> if you can't beat barack obama with this record, then shut down the party.

shut it down. start new, with new people. >> reporter: and there's conservative george will, arguing unemployment above 8%, worse if you count those who have given up. >> the republican party cannot win in this environment. it has to get out of politics and find another move. >> reporter: donald trump, tweeting what he heard from rush limbaugh. if obama wins, it is the end of the republican party. many conservative critics argue romney must deliver details. on romney's tax cuts for all, when will romney lift which tax deductions he'll get rid of to make up the difference? so many like the mortgage interest deduction. and as one conservative writer put it today, romney can no longer tell the voters he can handle the economy better. romney has to show it, not tell it. and the candidates did take something of a political pause, pulling all their attack ad office the air, in recognition of the 9/11 anniversary.

at the pentagon yesterday, a massive american flag was unfurled over the side of the building. the president and the first lady attended a ceremony there. laying a wreath in honor of the victims. and the towers of light, reaching to the sky. survivors of victims and family members gathered yesterday. chicago's striking teachers head back to the picket lines with no agreement in sight. both sides are still miles apart. after spending much of the day discussing teacher evaluations, the unions signed off on 6 of the nearly 50 articles in the contract. some parents are showing support for the teachers by rallying alongside them. a convicted tax cheat is getting $104 million from the irs. bradley burkenfeld told the irs

how his client was evading taxes. and his whistle-blower reward is a percentage of the money the irs recovered. he is now finishing his sentence with home confinement. las vegas will get a chance to dry out today after getting hammered by a powerful line of thunderstorms and downpours. it swamped entire neighborhoods. drivers had to be plucked to safety as the rain came down at the rate of two inches per hour. the storm also triggered delays at the airport. those southwest storms shift to the east, with the heaviest rain and flooding from phoenix to albuquerque. showers and thunderstorms from denver to green bay. scattered storms along the gulf coast, as well as much of florida. >> mostly 80s along the east coast. 90s from chicago to dallas. 70s from minneapolis to seattle. chilly and in the mid-50s in denver. still ahead, it's debut day for apple. with millions of iphone fans waiting in anticipation. then, buyer beware. maybe you noticed the smaller packages at the same prices for

welcome back, everyone. today, all signs pointing to apple unveiling the iphone 5. it is expected to be thinner, have a bigger screen and work with faster data networks. the iphone accounts for about 70% of apple's profits. and analysts say apple may sell

10 million iphone 5s by the end of the month. 45 million by the end of the year. anticipation's been so high that sales of older iphones were down significantly over the summer. >> amazing. the world is hearing from mark zuckerberg for the first time since he took facebook public and watched it quickly plummet. the stocks cost zuckerberg billions of dollars. but he seemed confident that he could turn things around. >> the performance of the stock has obviously been disappointing. and we care about our shareholders. and the commitment that we made is we're going to execute this mission of making the world for open and connected. and we're going to do the things we think are going to build value over the long term. >> investors appearancely liked what they heard. facebook stock shot up to about $19. wall street is keeping an eye on the federal reserve. fed officials are meeting today and tomorrow. and afterwards, they are likely to announce new efforts to boost the economy.

now, just the expectation alone was enough for the dow to gain 69 points yesterday and close at its highest level in almost five years. the nasdaq was up half a point with facebook stock higher after zuckerberg spoke. many companies are holding the line of prices by giving you less for your money. the amount inside the package is shrinking while the price remains the same. one giveaway is when the package says new and improved. that really means same price,less product. customers would rather have smaller packages than higher prices. i don't agree with that. how about give me all of it and keep the price low. >> new and improved means not so much. i'll keep my eye out next time at the supermarket. next on this wednesday morning, new doubts about popular fish oil pills. a new study compares those with eating the real thing. and the scandal rocking harvard's hallowed halls. the students facing expulse due to cheating allegations.

virtually useless when it comes to fighting heart disease. abc's dr. richard besser explains. >> fish oil may support heart health. >> supports a healthy heart. >> reporter: $740 million. that's how much we spend on them a year. fish oil capsules. containing the substance heart doctors swear by, omega 3 fatty acids. may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. but the groundbreaking new study says the proof is in. and fish oil capsules don't deliver on their promise. researchers looked at 20 studies on heart health. and said overall, people who took fish oil supplements are no less likely to die from heart disease or stroke, than anybody else. in short, no proven benefits. >> there's a lot of claims made about diets and supplements. they don't have the evidence behind them. >> reporter: but eating fish itself, that seems to help. people who eat fish twice a week

are less likely to have heart disease and less likely to die from it. it's not clear why getting omega 3 from food, not pills, makes a difference. but it appears it does. the body absorbs the fatty acid from eating fish in a different way. if you're spending money on fish oil capsules to protect your heart, it may be better to spend that money towards a nice piece of salmon. dr. richard besser, abc news, new york. and more medical news, now. a new study suggesting pancreatic cancer is the only major cancer killer where the incidence and death rates are expected to rise over the next 20 years. pancreatic cancer is a particularly deadly form of the disease, with the survival rate at about 5%. the cheating scandal at harvard university is reportedly impacting some of the school's sports teams. "sports illustrated" and the team's own newspaper says the co-captains of harvard's basketball team are being

implemented in the scandal. other athletes are among those implica implicated. administrators aren't commenting publicly. we're learning details about the relationship between amanda knox and her boyfriend. both were freed by an italian court last fall. in a new book, rafael sollecito admits their bizarre behavior may have given investigators reason for suspicion. knox is writing her own book about the whole ordeal. a wounded warrior from southern california can wake up in a brand-new house built especially for him. this is a great story. juan dominguez lost his legs and an arm in afghanistan. his home will make life a little easier. the wounded vet says he's getting a second chance at life. >> the chance to be able to go everywhere inside my house, upstairs, downstairs, every bathroom, every room.

everything. >> the grad student survives that flesh-eating disease that claimed her limbs made her first appearance since her devastating accident. abc's josh elliott was there. >> reporter: one step at a time. this brave 24-year-old turned tragedy into triumph. aimee copeland, making her first public appearance on katie couric's new talk show. do you feel like a miracle? >> i think i do, in a sense. >> reporter: aimee's story begins in may, when the adventurous grad student was zip lining across a river in georgia. the line snapped. and in the fall, she cut her leg on some rugs. potentially deadly bacteria invaded the wound and almost cost aimee her life. she would undergo 11 surgeries and grueling rehabilitation. what's been the hardest thing to relearn? >> there's so much. i think styling my hair is really complicated. i really think after i get home,
